Icy roads, heavy rain and freezing temperatures are just a few of the challenges faced by drivers during the winter months. Forced to leave the house early every morning to spend a few minutes defrosting your car - it’s a slow frustrating process whichever way you look at it and one that irritates many drivers across the UK.

So how can you prepare your vehicle in time for winter?

A routine service of your vehicle is a good start. Make sure windscreen wash and anti freeze levels are topped up to the required level and replace any old windscreen wipers. Top up the air levels in your tyres and make sure your tread is not less than 1.6 millimeters, the legal limit in the UK. If your tyres are low on air not only is your grip worse on the road, your car will use up more fuel than necessary to compensate. Carry an ice scraper and defroster on board for those wintry mornings and it’s worthwhile to always keep a blanket on board in case of an emergency. Finally check all lights are working including fog lights and if you’re about to embark on a long journey, carry a fuel can on board in case you get stranded and need to keep the engine running for warmth.

To keep your bodywork in good shape wash your car on a regular basis removing any build up of dirt and salt. Check for any stone chips which can quickly form into rust during damp, cold weather. If you’re missing any wheel trims its worth investing in a new set quickly to minimise corrosion to the wheel bolts which can seize as a result and make changing a wheel more difficult in the future.

During a cold snap it is also advisable to take extra care and attention whilst out on the road. For instance make sure your windscreen is properly defrosted and free of mist before departing. Slow your speeds around corners and twisty roads. Avoid any sharp braking and increase your stopping time to avoid any skidding on icy roads. Black ice is difficult to spot so air on the side of caution if you are not sure and take extra care travelling along tree lined roads. The shade from the trees also prevents the sun melting away any ice on the road.

If you have no alternative but to venture out during or following a heavy snow storm, make sure your mobile phone is fully charged, and if possible pack a shovel and sack to assist if you get struck, they could prove invaluable.
