For the majority of van owners their vehicle, tools and materials are their livelihood. Without them, their business cannot operate and as a result, income dries up. A situation no business van owner can afford to be in.
So how can you protect your van and ultimately your business against this?
Purchasing comprehensive van insurance cover from a reputable insurer is top of the list. As soon as you take ownership of a new vehicle you need insurance cover and tax in place before you can legally drive it away. Cover can be purchased via a broker, online or directly with an insurer and it’s imperative that you make your insurer aware if you plan to use your vehicle for business purposes. If you don’t, your policy could be rendered invalid in event of a claim.
An insurance policy protects you against loss as a result of a collision and against liability incurred if you have an accident in your van. It’s a form of risk management and is provided in return for an annual premium.
Additional van security can be added to your vehicle to deter criminals and in some cases, reduce your annual van insurance premium. Alarms and immobilisers can be fitted to any vehicle and additional locking mechanisms such as slam locks or dead locks keep contents safe.
Further security can be added to the interior of the vehicle such as steel or Perspex screens positioned behind the driver to prevent criminals climbing over the seats into the van, steel grilles on the back window and van boxes to store small documents and personal belongings away from view.
Always take care to park your van in a well lit area and when possible, park your van in a garage or secure compound over night. Remove any tools or stock from your vehicle during non-working hours. Vans frequently get broken into on the off chance that they are full of expensive tools and materials and replacing stock can be a time consuming and expensive task.
Remember safe driving pays in more ways than one – it not only reduces the risk of collision but also helps to reduce next year’s insurance premium.
