Tips to Becoming a Savvy Backpacker PDF  | Print |

The far-flung dream of travelling the world with your belongings strapped to your back is becoming the reality for more and more young people across the UK. From 6-weeks inter-railing around Europe to a year’s adventure travelling the world, there are many ways to enjoy some ‘time out’ in between study or jobs.

As a ‘seasoned’ traveler myself, I know how addictive the travelling bug can be. It gives you a sense of complete and utter freedom with the ability to go where you want, when you want and certainly opens your eyes to the many hidden gems dotted around the world. Not only that, backpacking gives you the opportunity to meet many new and interesting people and above all else, enjoy plenty of fun and exploits along the way!

If you’ve already got the travelling bug and are just about to embark on the adventure of a lifetime take a few minutes to read these ‘backpacker hints and tips’ to help you along your way:

Food & Drink – To avoid tummy upset always drink and wash your teeth with bottled water and avoid ice cubes in drinks. It is also advisable to only eat fruit you can peel and ensure meat is thoroughly cooked before eating – if an eatery looks unclean; it is probably not worth the risk.

Security – Where possible store your money, passport, visas and important documents inside a safe or as a last resort padlocked inside your backpack. Applying for new tickets and passports whilst away from home can be a frustrating process.

Routes – Stick to recognized tourists routes and if travelling alone, make sure someone back home is aware of your route and plans. Book any trips through reputable or recommended tour companies.

Health – Before leaving the UK check with your GP which vaccinations you require and ensure you always carry insect spray and rehydration salts in case of sickness.

Photos – Pack a good camera and if possible, regularly download pictures to an online site to avoid any disappointment should you lose your camera.

The Sun – Don’t be fooled by the strength of the sun whilst away and coat yourself daily in high protection sun cream. Wear a hat where possible to avoid the risk of sun stroke which can put you out of action for several days.

Chat to travelers – You will find fellow travelers are the best source of information whilst backpacking and will offer you advice, tips and recommendations about countries and cities they have already visited. Take as much advice on board as possible as it will almost certainly save you time and money in the long run.

All that’s left for me to say is enjoy your adventure, take plenty of pictures and do everything you want to do while you’re away – never let an opportunity to fulfill a dream slip away – you might never get that chance again!

Happy backpacking!
