Staying Safe Whilst Walking Alone at Night PDF  | Print |
For many UK residents, travelling alone at night is an unavoidable event. Whether you’re walking a few streets home from the tube station after work or taking a short stroll home after a night out, it’s advisable to take a few precautions before embarking on your trip.

So here are a few safety tips for you to consider:

  1. Take a mobile phone with you and let someone know where you are going and what time you plan to arrive. This is especially important when travelling alone at night time. Also inform someone when you arrive at your destination.

  2. Know your surroundings, where you are going and stick to lit footways where there are other pedestrians. Avoid going down dark alleyways or through covered woodland where you cannot be seen or heard.

  3. If walking at night try and plan to walk with other people. If you are by yourself walk against the traffic, and be wary of vehicles parked with their engines on. If uneasy about someone walking near you cross the road and go into a shop or knock on someone’s house.

  4. If you get a taxi, make sure it’s a registered vehicle and book it in advance for a set time. It’s also worth putting aside the money for the fare at the start of the night to avoid getting caught out later.

  5. Watch your drinking limits. Being drunk brings obvious dangers and reduces your sense of awareness.

  6. Limit the amount of desirable items you have with you such as jewelry, MP3 players or mobile phones. These will only attract unwanted attention. Limit the amount of cash you have on you and don’t flash it around in front of would be thieves.
Travel as part of a group where possible and stay aware of your surroundings at all times.
