You’ve been counting down the days until your holiday for months and you’re now just a day away from jetting off. You have just one problem – an empty suitcase and no idea where to start!
It’s very easy to take the easy option and tip a drawer full of clothes and cosmetics into your case and then spend the next twenty minutes trying to force it shut ready for the off. The likely outcome of this method being that the airline will charge you an outrageous amount for excess baggage and you won’t wear half of it anyway! There has to be a better more practical way to go about it, doesn’t there?
Your best bet is to start off by making piles of everything you ‘think’ you might need on your holiday and place them into piles of similar items. Then be ruthless and cut this back by at least another third removing all those ‘maybe’ items you probably won’t wear or miss while away and pack clothing which you can adapt and accessories to wear on several occasions. Remove bulky and heavy items, and pack travel sized cosmetics where possible to save on space. If you are travelling with someone else check to see you are not doubling up on any items and think about splitting your belongings between two cases. This way if one bag goes missing you should both have enough clothing to see you through the holiday or until the missing case arrives.
If you are still struggling, here is a list of holiday essential not to be forgotten:
-
Passport, flight tickets and driving licence
-
Travel insurance documents
-
Hotel name, directions booking references
-
Travellers cheques and money
-
Sun cream, sun hat and sunglasses
-
First aid kit, insect spray, travel sickness tablets and rehydration salts
-
Footwear, clothing and underwear for both day and night – including long sleeve tops for the evenings to keep you warm and also protect you from mosquito’s
-
Books, iPod, cards, puzzle books
-
Swimwear, beach towel, snorkel, lilo
-
Cosmetics
-
Jewellery, watch, bags and accessories
-
Camera, binoculars, video camera, phone and chargers
-
Guide book
Once you’re happy with your selection pack everything neatly into your suitcase taking extra care to wrap any fragile items with clothing. Don’t forget to label your case clearly and padlock luggage where possible.
It’s all too easy to over pack but by leaving that bit of empty space on the way out it will leave you plenty of room for souvenirs and gifts on the way back.
