How to Get Cheaper Bike Insurance PDF  | Print |

Everybody loves to save money especially when it comes to insurance and bike insurance is no exception. You hand over your premium each year but what do you get to show for it? One flimsy certificate stating the period you are covered for and that’s it. It seems the only time you ever recognise the true value of your insurance is if you’re ever involved in an incident and then it’s truly invaluable!

So how can you cut the cost of your insurance and ease the pain at your next renewal? We have compiled a few hints and tips to help reduce the cost of your insurance so read on to find out more:

Parking overnight – The more secure your bike is overnight, the less likely it is to get stolen and for this reason insurers charge lower premiums to those riders who secure their bikes in a locked garage overnight. If you do not have access to a garage, invest in a ground anchor or secure your bike behind locked gates to reduce the risk of it getting stolen or damaged.

Security – Whilst out and about on your bike it is just as important to keep your bike secure. Make sure you carry an approved lock with you at all times and set your alarm whilst away from your bike. Thieves take the easy option so the better the security, the more of a deterrent it will be to the ‘would be’ thieves.

No Claims Bonus (NCB) – Most insurers offer discounts on their premiums based on the number of claim free years you have been riding. The more years NCB you have, the greater the discount so safe riding certainly pays off.

Bike type – There are many factors which insurers use to determine your insurance premium – one of which is the type of bike. Faster more expensive bikes with bigger engines always attract higher premiums so if you don’t need to ride such a flash bike and would rather save money, downsize and your premium should reduce too.

Bike additions – Certain insurers offer discounts if you fit the likes of crash protectors to your bike. Crash protectors reduce the amount of damage to your bike in event of an accident, subsequently reducing the repair costs for the insurers. It is certainly worth while checking out what additional discounts insurers offer.

Avoid convictions – Speeding tickets and points on your license can increase the premium you pay, so to avoid paying over the odds for your insurance, we advise sticking to the speed limits and rules of the road.

Compare before you buy – Each insurer offers different deals and discounts which are always changing and updating. Make sure you compare a few quotes before you buy to ensure you are getting the cheapest and most comprehensive deal each year. Read more about bike comparaison companies on our Compare Bike Insurance page.
