Should young drivers be rewarded for safe driving?

Passing your driving test is the first step to safe driving but it isn’t the last. Over 3000 car drivers under 25 years old are killed or seriously injured on Britain’s roads each year. 1 in 5 drivers crash within their first year of driving. These figures show that younger drivers although qualified to drive are not necessarily ready too.

One of the main causes of accidents amongst the newly qualified is lack of experience. Another cause is the driver’s poor ability at identifying hazards and assessing risk. Although young drivers often have excellent vehicle control skills and fast reactions, they tend to overestimate

their ability to avoid the hazard and accident.

Did you know? It takes new drivers up to two seconds longer to react to

hazardous situations than more experienced drivers.

The IAM (Institute of Advanced Motorists) is calling on the government to work with insurers to offer discounts on premiums for young drivers who take further driver training. As the cost of car insurance increases it is having a huge impact on young driver’s ability to buy and build their no claims bonus.  Sometimes being quoted several times the value of their car just to get insured.

The average car insurance premium for young males aged 17-22 is £2,977, more than three times the average premium of £907.

IAM chief executive Simon Best said: “The simplest way to reduce insurance premiums is to prevent accidents. We need to start rewarding good drivers by encouraging further driver training through cheaper insurance. “

When asked 74 per cent of novice drivers said that they would definitely take further training if it saved them money on their car insurance.

As new drivers gain more driving experience their accident rate begins to fall, so if you have a young driver in your household encourage them to take further training. Also, if you are in a car with a newly qualified driver let them drive and you be their passenger, the more experience they get the better the driver they become
