Worried your vehicle is not road worthy in the eyes of the law? Is your vehicle in need of a maintenance inspection?

Don’t let your busy lifestyle get in the way of keeping your vehicle safe and legal. Take a few minutes to read through the following motoring tips to avoid unnecessary repair costs and unwanted attention from the police.

  • Regularly check your oil level, screen wash, and brake fluid levels (not just before long journeys). If your engine runs low on oil, the engine could seize up and a dirty windscreen could impair your vision whilst driving.

  • Check your headlights, brake lights, reverse lights and rear lamps.

  • Make sure all your seatbelts run free and work properly.

  • Regularly check tyre pressure (when the tyres are cold) and make sure there are no bald patches and the tread is above the minimum tread. To be on the safe side make sure the tread is over 2mm.

  • Check the wheel nuts to ensure they are not loose and make sure that the spare tyre is road worthy as well. People tend to use space saver wheels now but these should only be used to get you home or to the garage the next day, not for regular use.

  • Keep an eye on when your tax and insurance needs renewing, the punishment for driving without either of these are well known and there is no excuse for not having both.

Breaking traffic laws can lead to expensive legal costs, motoring fines and at times points on your licence causing enormous distress. It’s not difficult to keep a car in good condition if basic checks and are carried out regularly.

These are the minimum checks that should be carried out on your car to keep it in a road worthy condition. Regular services are advised.
